Belgravia Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy

Belgravia Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our customers, employees, contractors and the wider public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks in all aspects of our work, whether on residential or commercial premises.

Our Health and Safety Responsibilities

We recognise our responsibility to conduct our operations in a safe and responsible way. Management is responsible for implementing and maintaining effective health and safety arrangements, while every employee and contractor has a duty to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

We will provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure that all work is carried out safely and in accordance with current health and safety requirements relevant to cleaning activities.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting work, we will assess the risks associated with the cleaning tasks to be undertaken. This includes surveying the area, identifying potential hazards such as trip hazards, electrical outlets, slippery surfaces, low ventilation, confined spaces and the presence of vulnerable persons or pets.

Where necessary, we will adjust our methods of work, use alternative equipment or cleaning solutions and agree access arrangements with the client to minimise identified risks. Safe systems of work will be followed at all times, including the use of warning signs, appropriate handling techniques and careful positioning of machinery and hoses to prevent falls or obstructions.

Chemical and Cleaning Product Safety

We use professional cleaning solutions and products suitable for carpets, rugs, upholstery and other soft furnishings. All chemicals will be handled, stored, diluted and disposed of in line with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Safety data for products used is available on request.

We will avoid unnecessary exposure to cleaning chemicals by using the minimum effective quantities, ensuring good ventilation where possible and preventing access to products by children, pets or unauthorised persons. Containers will be clearly labelled, and decanting into unmarked containers is prohibited.

Equipment and Machinery Safety

All equipment, including vacuum units, extraction machines, steamers and hand tools, will be maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Damaged or defective equipment will be removed from service immediately until repaired or replaced.

Electrical leads and hoses will be routed in a way that minimises trip risks, and equipment will only be connected to suitable power outlets. Staff will receive training in the safe set up, use and shutdown of all machinery used in cleaning operations.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where there is a risk of exposure to chemicals, soiling, dust or other hazards, we will provide and require the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. This may include gloves, masks or respirators, protective footwear, eye protection and suitable workwear.

Employees are responsible for wearing the protective equipment issued to them, using it correctly and reporting any damage or loss so it can be replaced promptly.

Protection of Clients, Visitors and the Public

We will plan and carry out our work to minimise any risk to clients, visitors, neighbours and the general public. Access routes will be kept as clear as reasonably practicable, and warning signs or verbal warnings will be used where necessary, particularly when floors or carpets may remain damp or slippery after cleaning.

Children, pets and vulnerable persons should be kept away from active work areas and machinery. Our staff will cooperate with clients to agree suitable working times and arrangements to reduce disruption and maintain safe surroundings.

Health, Hygiene and Welfare of Staff

We aim to protect the health and wellbeing of all those working for Belgravia Carpet Cleaning. Staff will be trained in safe manual handling techniques to prevent injuries when moving furniture, equipment or heavy items. They are encouraged to report any health concerns, near misses or unsafe conditions without delay.

Good hygiene practices are promoted at all times, including hand washing or sanitising after handling soiled materials, using cleaning chemicals or completing waste disposal tasks.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous incidents must be reported to management as soon as reasonably possible. We will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Employees will be familiar with basic emergency procedures relevant to their work environments, such as responding to fire alarms, evacuating premises safely and calling for emergency assistance when required. First aid arrangements are in place, and staff are encouraged to seek medical attention promptly where appropriate.

Training, Supervision and Competence

Belgravia Carpet Cleaning will provide suitable induction and ongoing training so that employees are competent to perform their duties safely. Training covers safe use of equipment, chemical handling, manual handling, site safety, incident reporting and customer care in relation to health and safety matters.

New or less experienced staff will receive additional supervision until they demonstrate the required competence. We will keep records of key training activities and refresh knowledge periodically.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. This policy, along with related procedures, will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment, products or relevant guidance.

Feedback from clients, employees and contractors is welcomed as part of our efforts to maintain a safe and professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service. Any suggestions for improving safety standards will be considered carefully and, where appropriate, incorporated into our working practices.

This Health and Safety Policy applies to all activities carried out by Belgravia Carpet Cleaning and all persons engaged by us in delivering our services.
